Facebook Business Page Ranking Factors

Small businesses – especially solo entrepreneurs with little to no marketing budget – can’t rely on “free” advertising via Facebook posts anymore. The new Facebook news feed will now make it even harder to get your content noticed through organic sharing.

A few things to keep in mind when posting to your Facebook Business Page.

Facebook Business Page Ranking Factors

Since Facebook introduced paid social advertising, we've seen organic reach significantly decrease year after year. Did you know less than 2% of your page followers actually see your unpaid posts? That means if your page has 800 followers only 16 of them will see your post. It makes sense for Facebook to promote paid content. After all, if business pages had organic reach on their own how would Facebook make money?

Facebook's News Feed favors friends over brands and businesses, focusing on meaningful interactions. Facebook has certain ranking factors that determine how many users will see your organic (unpaid) posts. What are these factors and what should you avoid?

Facebook mentions three major categories of ranking signals to help choose which content goes out.

1. Who a user typically interacts with

2. The type of media in the post (eg., video, link, photo, etc.)

3. The popularity of the post

What to Avoid

1. Engagement Baiting- avoid asking people to “please comment, like, and share.” Your content should inspire them to engage without having to ask.

2. Overly promotional content pushing people to buy

3. Posts that push people to enter a contest or sweepstakes.

Tips to improve your organic reach

Encourage engagement - Engaging with your audience involves more than just sharing content that gets likes. It’s about interacting with and building a relationship with your followers by responding to criticisms, having conversations, and learning from your customers.

Try using the new Organic Targeting Feature when you schedule your next post.

Now more than ever, social media is pay to play. Paid advertising is the only way to ensure that your content will get in front of your desired audience.
